In a national broadcast exclusive, University of Utah student Tim DeChristopher explains how he bought 22000 acres of land in an attempt to save the property from drilling. The sale had been strongly opposed by many environmental groups. Stephen Bloch of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance said: “This is the fire sale, the Bush administrations last great gift to the oil and gas industry. I’ve gotten several requests to make a simpler woodgas stove than what I’ve been making lately. Something that doesn’t take special parts that only I seem to have. Something that is easier to make than some of the woodgas stoves I’ve made in the past. To go back to the woodgas stove rather than the wood forge stoves. So I rummaged through my can stores and found a soup can that fit into a one quart paint can perfectly and proceeded from there. This video shows how I put those two cans together to make what I think is a pretty simple stove that I think anyone could put together using only a few tools such as a can opener(side cutting), drill, drill bit or uni-bit, and maybe a needle-nosed pliers. The stove may be a little big by some peoples standards but when you consider that it burns fuel that you can find along the trail it will save both money and weight on long trips. Also I used the extra space in the stove to store an alcohol stove and fuel to be used when or if needed. I hope that my requesters (is that a word?) will find this stove easy to make and useful.

@Amaroq64 you would trade a little lower gas prices for this amazing place. why its not like its going to make anything better sure maybe gas prices would go down a bit. in short terms. but in the long run gas prices will just shoot back up again. even worse then befor even. but you know what would’nt shoot right back up or not come back at all. nature and all the amazing landscapes that have been forming for MILLIONS OF YEARS. ha wow what a great trade that is.

If he wanted to stay out of jail, he should have driven drunk or hit his wife or started a fight or raped a kid. They give you a stern warning and a gift basket for violent offenses. Messing with the man’s money – you will get sent up the river without compunction.

  3. Toobtron says:

First of all, you need a plan if you’re going to commit a Felony crime to stop big oil. I would plant fake archeological remains and artifacts at the drill sites as archeological discoveries can sometimes cause serious delays. just my 2 cents.

For DeChristopher, I would have thought with his skill set and grad degree, he would have chosen to cover himself in oil and set himself on fire in protest. Regardless, I am confident that he will lead the environmental movement to new heights from jail.

    @Amaroq64
Wow, you sure are an insightful, critical thinker! Oh gee, I bet gas prices would drop down to like $1.50 a gallon if they open up this land!!

  5. Amaroq64 says:

I want to know who owned the land? As in, who held the property rights to it? In my view, whoever could legitimately buy the land should have been given it. This man is just a criminal for bidding money he didn’t have. And for what? I’d rather the oil companies get the land so my gas prices can go down than for environmentalist nutcases be praised for violating property rights because they think the land looks pretty.

@Manchac7 I wish youtube comment votes worked for me so I could upvote your comment, good sir.

If he goes to jail then I will lose all faith in America.

  8. j1a2r34 says:

Why didn’t Redford and his wealthy friends buy the rights? Imagine being able to bequeath your estate the absolute LAST barrel of oil on Earth. Why aren’t environmentalists of every stripe collectively stockpiling money in time for next opportunity (maybe the next auction) to make a real difference?

well its done ……and what did it do ruint the place forever

  13. claythestewart says:

I live in southern Utah as it is our landscape is exploited for out-of-state vistors by the federal government. 57% of Utah is federally owned. Google image search “who owns the west”. Search “utah coal lockup”. A trillion dollar coal deposit was encased in a 1.7 million acre executive order. Democrat Clinton looking out for the never contested Republican stronghold, not.

Why is a such a problem that the BLM is actually un-landlocking our resources?

  14. claythestewart says:

Robert Redford go play defender of all crime somewhere else. The lands are not Bush’s, Cheney’s, or even yours Mr. Redford. How about mine? Living here my whole life, now unemployed.

He sucks and is a criminal

  16. Gusto222 says:

    more power to this doood!!

  17. sandweezy says:

Yea…and how do you think that land will look after 30 – 100 years of oil drilling?….COMPLETELY RUINED!. Think about YOUR land. This is America…..why the fuck do we need to make one of the most gorgeous countries in the world look like a damn deserted island. Wildlife brings more to the country than just gorgeous views….it preserves the life that lives there. Fuck OIL….it is alllllll a scam for little koolaid drinkers like yourself.

  18. TIMESNIPPET says:

    Tim DeChristopher is a HERO!

  19. laurasIs2c says:

If you’d get your head out of the oil dependend lies, you’d know that real conservatives, conserve things like our national lands. There are ways to apply Mike Strizki processes to restructuring energy use to heat homes that would create jobs and provide creative opportunities for your friends and loved ones, not to mention taxes to pay for other things to conserve, and research development.

  20. supreme600 says:

We could have free energy technologies but the department of energy and the pentagon suppress these technologies in the interest of national security.

  21. Manchac7 says:

Maybe this 27 yr old brainwashed liberal arts major should get on with life and start contributing something to society. How does he think his home or precious classrooms are heated in winter?

  22. abundantlyharmonic says:

Rock on! I love to see positive pro-action to straighten out this mess. Every bit each individual can do is vital at this point. Thank you so much for protecting mother nature.

  24. pansarasa says:

Go Tim, go!! May we all be inspired by this – get out there and stop the corporate greedies and thieves from selling, buying, raping, pillaging it all off! Sometimes all it takes is a quick finger, folks.

Good video. Making my wood gasifier today.. ….and THANK YOU for your clearly spoken words….no studdering, and none of those phrases were used of – “you know what I’m sayin”….. “it’s like, kinda like, I was like”……. “you know aye”….. Good video. Thank you sir.

  26. colonelchimp says:

@hiramcook hi there Hiram, well i have to say thanks for the videos, very informative and idiot proof, i have made a simple stove now and it works, the only difference was i used 4 self tapping screws to hold the cans together, and i made a pot stand with 3 extra tabs on top, 2 squares hi and 2 wide, and bent those inward to make a more stable place for canteen cups etc, i boiled 2.5 cups water in my crusader cup in 9 mins, first time, worked great so thanks again, keep up the good work,

  27. TheBgcheez says:

1/3 cup premium wood pellets burn for almost 25-30min depending on wind in this stove.

  28. ellzaerage says:

What is a wood gas stove? is it like an alcohol stove? PLEASE RESPOND :) Great video man!

  29. jw934 says:

@pauldude000 Paul, I am looking for a large stove (like the full size coffee can) which does not leave soot or tar on the pot. Just wondering if you have come across any on the web or have made any. Thanks, Andrew

  30. 40hurts says:

Built one of these tonight. Test burn went so well it started to melt the “drain strainer” in the bottom of the soup can! Going to do a boil test tomorrow. Thanks Hiram!

  31. ruleof3survival says:

Thanks HIram. This is the best wood gas video I’ve found. I have posted this video to my site. Check it out at ruleof3survival com/home-made-gear

  32. moratraken says:

great video hiram!! just built one today (took about an hour :) I had an issue getting a secondary burn to happen. it just smoked :( perhaps my holes were too far from the top, or do you think that if I were to try a chimney on top instead of just a pot standoff that might help? Any suggestions would be appreciated because I think that this would be my new fav stove!

Thanks again for this awesome vid.

  33. hiramcook says:

    I’m glad if I helped.

  34. hiramcook says:

I’m a backpacking nerd that enjoys making and testing stoves and other camping stuff.

  35. FixedByDoc says:

thanks i finaly get it… now off to make me one…

  36. suphomieg2 says:

@hiramcook do you still backpack or do you just enjoy making stoves?

  37. hiramcook says:

Yes that was a alcohol wick stove that I was playing with. There’s a couple of videos that I did on it. Hope you’ll upload a video of your stove after you put it together.

  38. Jeffrich308 says:

Great Video! Can’t wait to try one. Did you make the small alcohol stove? The looks interesting as well. I always like some type of backup.

  39. notoriouslizw says:

Excellent! I finally made one! Instead of a bunch of holes on the outside I made one square hole about 1 1/2″ X 2″ and I aim my heat gun at it with just the fan (no heat). The thing blows so hot! I like the fan idea so I’m going to figure out a cheap exterior DC fan that I can place in front of it. Love the simplicity! Made a bigger one with a gallon paint can and a Goya bean can, splined hole in lid. It worked well too. I’m going to look for a slightly bigger inner can for a little more BTU.
